New Market Kolkata Shopping Guide: History, Shops, Food, Timings & Complete Visitor Guide

New Market Kolkata

If you are looking for the best shopping market in Kolkata, then New Market Kolkata should definitely be on your list. Officially known as Sir Stuart Hogg Market, this iconic destination has been serving shoppers for more than 150 years and continues to be one of the busiest and most loved markets in the city.

Located in the heart of Dharmatala (Esplanade), New Market is much more than a place to shop. It is a blend of history, heritage, street shopping, delicious food, colonial architecture, and Kolkata’s unique culture. Whether you are a tourist visiting the city for the first time or a local resident looking for great bargains, New Market has something for everyone.

During my recent visit, I explored almost every street surrounding the market. Although it was a Sunday and the main Hogg Market building was closed, the surrounding lanes were full of life, with thousands of shoppers enjoying the vibrant atmosphere.

History of New Market Kolkata

New Market was established in 1874 during British rule and was originally named Sir Stuart Hogg Market, after Sir Stuart Hogg, the then Chairman of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation.

The market was designed to serve the growing European population of Calcutta. Over the decades, it gradually became one of the city’s most popular shopping destinations for everyone.

Even today, the beautiful red-brick building, Gothic arches, and famous clock tower remind visitors of Kolkata’s rich colonial past. Walking around the market feels like stepping into a different era while still enjoying the energy of a modern shopping district.

Handicrafts and Antique Shops

One thing that caught my attention during the visit was the presence of several handicraft and antique stores around the New Market area. These shops display wooden handicrafts, brass decorative items, handmade souvenirs, traditional artworks, and vintage-style collectibles that attract both Indian and international tourists.

As someone who is familiar with Indian handicrafts, I enjoyed exploring these stores and comparing the products. I also noticed that many similar handcrafted items are available through trusted online handicraft stores, often at more affordable prices and with a wider collection. If you are specifically looking for authentic terracotta art, Dhokra crafts, Pattachitra paintings, Chhau masks, wooden handicrafts, or handmade home decor, you may also like to explore my recommended online handicraft collection before making your purchase.

I always recommend comparing quality, craftsmanship, and prices before buying any handmade product.

The real charm of New Market extends beyond the heritage building.

The surrounding streets are packed with small vendors and local shops selling fashionable clothing, handbags, footwear, sunglasses, belts, cosmetics, and many everyday products.

Every lane has its own specialty, making it impossible to explore everything in just one visit. If you enjoy discovering hidden markets and finding good bargains, this area will easily keep you busy for several hours.

The iconic red-brick façade, elegant arches, and the famous clock tower are wonderful examples of British-era architecture. These heritage structures continue to attract photographers, architecture lovers, and history enthusiasts from across the country.

I spent quite some time photographing the exterior because the building looks stunning from almost every angle.

For decades, this bustling marketplace has been the go-to destination for students, professionals, gamers, photographers, office workers, and technology enthusiasts looking for everything from laptops and smartphones to computer accessories and repair services.

Located in the heart of Kolkata, near Chandni Chowk Metro Station and Esplanade, Chandni Market is much more than a shopping destination. It is an ecosystem where you can buy new electronics, explore refurbished devices, build a custom gaming PC, upgrade your laptop, repair damaged gadgets, and even exchange your old devices for better value.

During my recent visit, I explored not only the famous E Mall Kolkata but also many surrounding shops that make Chandni Market one of the busiest technology hubs in Eastern India. Walking through the narrow lanes filled with electronics stores, service centres, and computer shops reminded me why this market continues to attract thousands of visitors every day.

Whether you’re planning to buy your first laptop or simply looking for the best place to repair or upgrade your existing one, this guide will help you understand everything Chandni Market has to offer.

Why is Chandni Market Kolkata So Famous?

Unlike modern shopping malls that mainly focus on branded retail stores, Chandni Market Kolkata offers incredible variety. Hundreds of small and large businesses operate here, creating healthy competition that often results in better prices for customers.

People from different parts of West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha and even the North-East travel here because they know they can compare prices from multiple shops before making a purchase.

One of the biggest advantages of shopping in Chandni Market is the flexibility. Instead of buying whatever a single store offers, you can visit several shops, compare prices, negotiate, and choose the option that best fits your budget.

This is one of the reasons why Chandni Market has remained Kolkata’s most trusted electronics destination for many years.

Russell Exchange Kolkata: Inside the Last Surviving Historic Auction House in Kolkata

Russell Exchange Kolkata entrance – one of the oldest surviving auction houses in Asia.

Kolkata is a city where history still breathes through its streets, colonial buildings, and hidden heritage. While millions of tourists visit Victoria Memorial, Indian Museum, or Park Street every year, very few know about a fascinating place tucked away on Russell Street. This place is Russell Exchange Kolkata, one of the oldest surviving auction houses in Asia and undoubtedly one of the most unique heritage destinations in the city.

Recently, I visited Russell Exchange Kolkata on a Sunday to experience its famous live auction. What I witnessed was unlike anything I had seen before. From antique furniture and vintage wall clocks to lanterns, paintings, rare collectibles, and imported furniture, every corner of this historic building tells a story.

If you love history, antiques, photography, or simply want to explore hidden places in Kolkata, this guide is for you.

What is Russell Exchange Kolkata?

Russell Exchange Kolkata is a historic auction house located at 12C Russell Street, just a short walk from Park Street Metro Station.

Unlike a traditional antique shop, Russell Exchange operates as a live auction house every Sunday. Instead of fixed prices, buyers compete by bidding, and the highest bidder wins the item.

The collection changes regularly and includes hundreds of unique products, making every visit different from the previous one.

Russell Exchange Kolkata
Russell Exchange Kolkata

A Short History of Russell Exchange

Russell Exchange has been serving collectors and antique lovers for decades.

During the British colonial era, many European families lived in Kolkata. Whenever they left India or shifted elsewhere, they sold their imported furniture, paintings, clocks, lamps, and decorative items through auction houses.

Back then, imported products were extremely rare in India. Before the economic liberalisation of 1991, foreign products were difficult to obtain, making these auctions incredibly popular.

However, after India opened its economy, imported goods became widely available. Gradually, most auction houses across Kolkata shut down.

Today, Russell Exchange Kolkata remains one of the last surviving auction houses, preserving a unique part of the city’s heritage.

My Visit to Russell Exchange Kolkata

My journey started from Park Street Metro Station.

Since it was Sunday afternoon, the roads were surprisingly calm compared to the usual rush of Park Street. After walking around 400 metres, I reached the entrance of Russell Exchange.

From outside, the building immediately gives a vintage colonial feel. The old entrance, faded walls, and historic architecture make it look like a place frozen in time.

As soon as I entered, I noticed antique furniture stacked everywhere. Every available space was filled with interesting objects waiting for their turn in the auction.

The Sunday Auction Experience

The highlight of visiting Russell Exchange Kolkata is undoubtedly the Sunday auction.

The auction usually takes place between 11:00 AM and around 5:00 PM.

When I reached around 12:30 PM, the auction was already in full swing.

An auctioneer stood at the front while buyers continuously placed bids.

One after another, different items were brought forward.

The atmosphere was exciting.

Some products sold for just ₹50, while premium antique furniture and collectibles attracted bids worth several lakh rupees.

Even if you don’t plan to buy anything, simply watching the auction is a wonderful experience.

What Can You Buy Here?

One of the biggest surprises during my visit was the incredible variety of products.

I saw:

  • Antique wooden furniture
  • Vintage wall clocks
  • Lanterns
  • Brass decorative items
  • Imported cabinets
  • Wooden chairs
  • Dining tables
  • Paintings
  • Mirrors
  • Collectibles
  • Crockery
  • Decorative lamps
  • Office furniture
  • Rare vintage pieces

Some items looked over a hundred years old.

Collectors, interior designers, hotel owners, antique dealers, and heritage enthusiasts regularly visit the auction.

Two Floors Filled with History

Russell Exchange has two floors, and both are packed with antiques.

There was hardly any empty space.

Furniture was stacked on top of each other.

Old cabinets stood beside antique mirrors.

Vintage clocks rested next to colonial chairs.

Walking through the narrow passages felt like exploring a living museum rather than a marketplace.

Every object seemed to have its own history.

Can Visitors Participate in the Auction?

Yes.

Anyone can watch the auction.

If you find an item you like, you can participate in the bidding.

I also considered buying something as a memory from the visit.

However, despite seeing many beautiful antiques, I couldn’t find anything that matched my personal preference.

Still, watching the bidding process itself was worth the visit.

Russell Exchange Kolkata

Why is Russell Exchange Still Famous?

Unlike many old businesses that disappeared with time, Russell Exchange continues to attract visitors because of its authenticity.

It is not a recreated tourist attraction.

It is a real working auction house where genuine buying and selling happen every Sunday.

This authenticity makes it one of the most unique experiences in Kolkata.

Things You Should Know Before Visiting

Here are a few useful tips:

  • Visit on Sunday for the live auction.
  • Reach before noon if you want to see more items.
  • Carry cash or confirm payment options before bidding.
  • Wear comfortable shoes because you’ll spend considerable time walking.
  • Photography is generally possible, but always respect staff instructions.
  • Take your time exploring both floors.

How to Reach Russell Exchange Kolkata

Nearest Metro Station: Park Street Metro

Distance: Approximately 400 metres on foot.

You can also reach easily by taxi, app cab, or local bus.

Being located in central Kolkata, connectivity is excellent.

Approximately 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM

On weekdays, Russell Exchange functions more like a regular antique furniture and auction office.

Why Every History Lover Should Visit

Kolkata is famous for preserving its colonial heritage.

While most visitors explore monuments and museums, places like Russell Exchange provide a completely different experience.

Instead of looking at objects behind glass, you see real antiques that people can actually purchase.

That makes the experience far more interactive and memorable.

Whether you’re interested in photography, antiques, architecture, history, or simply discovering hidden gems, Russell Exchange deserves a place on your Kolkata itinerary.

My Experience

Among all the places I have explored in Kolkata, Russell Exchange felt truly different.

There are no flashy lights or modern attractions.

Instead, there is history.

Every room is filled with objects that have witnessed different eras.

Watching people bid enthusiastically for vintage furniture reminded me that history still has value—not just emotionally but economically as well.

If you are looking for an offbeat destination in Kolkata, I highly recommend visiting Russell Exchange at least once.

It offers an experience that very few places in India can provide.

Decathlon Salt Lake Kolkata

If you’re looking for the best place to buy sports equipment, camping gear, or trekking essentials in Kolkata, Decathlon Salt Lake Kolkata is one of the top destinations. Whether you’re a beginner planning your first camping trip or an experienced traveler looking for reliable outdoor equipment, this store has a wide range of quality products at reasonable prices.

Recently, my wife Priyunka and I visited the Decathlon Salt Lake store to explore their camping collection. Our main purpose was to compare the 2-person and 3-person Quechua camping tents, understand their features, and decide which one would suit our travel style.

In this article, I’ll share our complete experience along with useful buying tips that can help you choose the right camping gear.

Why Visit Decathlon Salt Lake Kolkata?

Located in Salt Lake, Kolkata, Decathlon is much more than a sports shop. It offers products for over 60 sports and outdoor activities, including:

  • Camping
  • Trekking
  • Hiking
  • Cycling
  • Running
  • Fitness
  • Swimming
  • Football
  • Cricket
  • Yoga
  • Adventure Travel

The store is spacious, neatly organized, and allows customers to experience many products before buying them.

Decathlon Salt Lake Kolkata

Exploring the Camping Section

As travel enthusiasts, we headed directly to the camping section.

The display included:

  • Quechua Camping Tents
  • Folding Camping Chairs
  • Sleeping Bags
  • Inflatable Mattresses
  • Camping Lights
  • Cookware
  • Hiking Backpacks
  • Trekking Accessories

The staff had assembled several tents, making it easy for visitors to walk inside and understand the available space.

This is something online shopping simply cannot provide.

Decathlon Salt Lake Kolkata

Our Experience with the Quechua 2-Person Tent

One of the highlights of our visit was exploring the Quechua 2-person tent.

Instead of just looking at the specifications, I went inside the tent to check how practical it would be during real camping trips.

At 5 feet 8 inches, I could comfortably lie down inside the tent. I also checked whether our travel backpack could fit without making the sleeping area too cramped.

The tent also includes useful storage pockets that help organize mobile phones, power banks, torches, and other small items.

For solo travelers or couples carrying minimal luggage, this tent is an excellent option.

Why We Preferred the 3-Person Tent

Although the 2-person tent felt comfortable, our travel style is slightly different.

Usually, both of us travel together with our backpacks, camera gear, helmets, and other accessories.

After comparing both models, we realized that a 3-person tent would provide significantly more usable space without making camping uncomfortable.

Extra space becomes especially useful during rainy weather or longer camping trips when you need to keep your luggage inside the tent.

Sometimes spending a little extra money gives much better comfort in the long run.

Setting Up the Tent Was Surprisingly Easy

One feature that impressed us was how simple the Quechua tent is to assemble.

The demonstration showed that even first-time campers can set it up within a few minutes by following the basic instructions.

The tent structure feels stable, and the waterproof outer layer adds confidence for camping during unpredictable weather.

This ease of setup makes it a great choice for beginners.

A Good Option for Bike Travelers

Most of our trips are done on our Hero Xoom 125 scooter.

Unlike a car, a scooter has limited storage space.

Although the tents are packed compactly, carrying the tent along with chairs and other camping equipment on the scooter would have been inconvenient.

Instead of carrying everything home ourselves, we decided that ordering through the Decathlon app would be a more practical option.

If you travel on a scooter or motorcycle, planning your luggage in advance is extremely important.

Product Quality and Store Experience

One reason Decathlon has become popular across India is its product quality.

Most of their camping products are designed for regular outdoor use and offer a good balance between affordability and durability.

During our visit, we found the staff helpful without being overly pushy.

Customers are free to explore products, test selected items, and compare different models before making a purchase.

This creates a comfortable shopping experience.

Decathlon Salt Lake Kolkata

Is Decathlon Salt Lake Worth Visiting?

In my opinion, absolutely.

Whether you’re planning your first camping trip, preparing for a trekking adventure, or simply looking for quality sports equipment, the store offers something for everyone.

Being able to physically inspect a tent before purchasing helps you make a much better decision than relying only on online images.

If you’re from Kolkata or nearby areas, visiting the store before buying expensive camping equipment is highly recommended.

Tips Before Buying a Camping Tent

Here are a few things you should consider:

  • Choose a tent according to the number of people and luggage.
  • Waterproof protection is essential during the monsoon.
  • Check the packed size if you travel by scooter or motorcycle.
  • Practice setting up the tent once before your first camping trip.
  • Invest in a quality sleeping mat for added comfort.

Final Verdict

Our visit to Decathlon Salt Lake Kolkata turned out to be both informative and enjoyable.

Testing the Quechua tents in person helped us understand the practical differences between the 2-person and 3-person models. For our style of travel, the 3-person tent seems like the better investment because it offers additional space for luggage while keeping the camping experience comfortable.

If you’re planning a camping adventure in India, visiting Decathlon before making your purchase is definitely worth your time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Decathlon Salt Lake Kolkata good for camping gear?

Yes. The store offers a wide range of camping equipment, including Quechua tents, sleeping bags, chairs, backpacks, and other outdoor essentials.

Which is better: a 2-person or 3-person tent?

A 2-person tent is suitable for two people with minimal luggage. If you carry backpacks, camera gear, or camping accessories, a 3-person tent provides a much more comfortable experience.

Can beginners set up a Quechua tent?

Yes. Most Quechua tents are designed for quick and easy assembly, making them suitable even for first-time campers.

Is it better to buy from the store or online?

Visiting the store allows you to inspect and compare products physically. If carrying the items home is difficult, you can order them later through the Decathlon app or website.

Howrah Rail Museum: Complete Visitor Guide 2026 | Ticket Price, Timings, Royal Saloon & Honest Review

Howrah Rail Museum

Howrah Rail Museum – Is It Worth Visiting?

If you are searching for Howrah Rail Museum, Rail Museum Kolkata, or wondering whether this hidden attraction near Howrah Railway Station is worth your time, then the answer is yes—but with a few expectations.

Located only 500 metres from the New Complex of Howrah Railway Station, the Regional Rail Museum is one of Kolkata’s least explored tourist attractions. Managed by Eastern Railway, this museum beautifully preserves the glorious history of Indian Railways through vintage locomotives, heritage coaches, railway equipment, historical photographs, miniature models and one of its biggest attractions—the luxurious Royal Saloon.

Unlike large museums, this place combines history, open gardens, heritage trains and family-friendly spaces. Whether you’re a railway enthusiast, photographer, traveller or simply looking for a peaceful weekend destination near Kolkata, the museum offers a unique experience.

Recently, my wife Priyunka and I visited the museum on a Sunday, and this guide shares everything we experienced—including both the positives and the areas that still need improvement.

Suitable ForFamilies, Couples, Kids, Railway Lovers

Our Journey to Howrah Rail Museum

Like many of our travel adventures, this trip started with a simple idea—to explore a place that many people pass by but very few actually visit.

Since the museum is just a short walk from the new complex of Howrah Station, reaching it was extremely convenient.

Even before entering, the peaceful atmosphere was a pleasant surprise. Outside the station, thousands of passengers rush every minute, but inside the museum compound, everything suddenly becomes calm.

The greenery, heritage buildings and vintage railway engines instantly transport you back in time.

Howrah Rail Museum

First Impression

The first thing that caught my attention was the beautifully preserved steam locomotive standing proudly inside the museum.

It is impossible not to stop and admire its massive wheels, giant boiler and classic engineering.

For railway lovers, this is a paradise.

For photographers, it’s even better.

Almost every locomotive tells a story from a different era of Indian Railways.

Heritage Locomotives

One of the biggest attractions is the collection of historic locomotives.

Inside the museum you’ll find:

  • Steam locomotives
  • Diesel locomotives
  • Electric locomotives
  • Railway engines used during different periods

Each engine has its own history and technical details displayed nearby.

Even if you’re not interested in trains, the sheer size and engineering of these machines are fascinating.

Vintage Railway Coaches

The museum also displays several old railway coaches.

Walking around them feels like stepping into another century.

These coaches showcase how railway travel has evolved over the decades—from wooden interiors to modern passenger comfort.

The Royal Saloon – The Highlight of the Museum

Without any doubt, the Royal Saloon is the biggest attraction.

This was the section that impressed us the most.

The Royal Saloon was designed for kings, queens, princes and high-ranking officials during the British era.

Inside, you’ll discover:

  • Wooden flooring
  • Luxurious bedroom
  • Beautiful dining room
  • Elegant drawing room
  • Attached bathroom
  • Traditional wash basin
  • Separate kitchen
  • Attendant’s room
  • Premium interior decoration

Walking through the Royal Saloon almost feels like entering a moving palace.

It gives visitors a rare glimpse into how royal families travelled by train many decades ago.

Even today, Indian Railways maintains special saloons for senior railway officials and VIP movements, continuing this historic tradition.

Replica of Howrah Station

Another interesting attraction is the miniature replica of Howrah Railway Station.

It beautifully recreates one of India’s busiest railway terminals and is especially popular among children and photography lovers.

Howrah Rail Museum

Toy Train Ride

The toy train is one of the most enjoyable parts of the museum.

Although small, it circles through the beautiful gardens and gives visitors a relaxing ride around the museum premises.

Families with children were clearly enjoying this attraction.

Even adults couldn’t resist taking a ride.

Beautiful Gardens

The museum has well-maintained lawns filled with greenery.

Unlike crowded tourist spots, this place offers plenty of open space.

Couples were spending quality time.

Families were relaxing.

Children were running around freely.

The atmosphere felt peaceful and refreshing.

The 360° View from the Central Building

One of my favourite moments was climbing the central heritage building.

From the top, I captured a complete 360-degree panoramic view of the museum.

From here you can see:

  • Heritage locomotives
  • Gardens
  • Toy train track
  • Museum buildings
  • Entire museum campus

For photographers and drone lovers (where permitted), this viewpoint is excellent.

Howrah Rail Museum

Restaurant Inside a Railway Coach

One unique attraction that surprised us was the restaurant built inside an old railway coach.

Instead of eating in a normal restaurant, visitors can enjoy their meal inside a railway compartment.

It perfectly matches the museum’s railway theme and makes the experience even more memorable.

Railway History Gallery

Inside the museum building, you’ll also find:

  • Historic railway photographs
  • Railway trophies
  • Railway maps
  • Old signalling equipment
  • Information panels
  • Heritage displays

These exhibits help visitors understand how Indian Railways evolved over the decades.

Our Honest Experience

As always on Safarnama Online, we believe in sharing honest experiences—not just the positives.

Here’s what we genuinely felt.

What We Loved

  • Very peaceful environment
  • Excellent collection of locomotives
  • Beautiful Royal Saloon
  • Good photography opportunities
  • Family-friendly atmosphere
  • Close to Howrah Station
  • Affordable destination
  • Great for history lovers

Areas That Need Improvement

Although we enjoyed the visit, there are a few areas where the museum can improve.

Washroom Maintenance

The washrooms were not maintained properly during our visit.

Cleanliness is something every tourist expects, especially at a government-maintained tourist attraction.

Improving sanitation would significantly enhance the visitor experience.

Children’s Play Area

There is a children’s play area inside the museum.

Unfortunately, it looked neglected and under-maintained.

With better upkeep, it could become one of the museum’s biggest attractions for families.

Photography Tips

If you’re visiting for photography:

  • Visit during morning hours.
  • Carry a wide-angle lens if possible.
  • The steam locomotive makes an excellent thumbnail background.
  • The Royal Saloon interiors look best with natural light.
  • Don’t miss the panoramic view from the central building.

Who Should Visit?

This museum is perfect for:

  • Railway enthusiasts
  • Families
  • Couples
  • Children
  • History lovers
  • Photographers
  • Weekend travellers
  • Tourists visiting Kolkata

Is It Worth Visiting?

Yes.

Especially if you are already near Howrah Station.

The museum offers a unique combination of railway heritage, peaceful surroundings, historical exhibits and family entertainment.

It is not a place filled with thrilling rides or modern attractions.

Instead, it provides something increasingly rare—a chance to slow down and appreciate the remarkable history of Indian Railways.

Final Verdict

Our visit to Howrah Rail Museum turned out to be a memorable experience. From standing beside century-old steam locomotives to stepping inside the magnificent Royal Saloon, every corner reflected the rich heritage of Indian Railways. The toy train, replica of Howrah Station, heritage galleries and peaceful gardens made the visit enjoyable for visitors of all ages.

At the same time, we hope Eastern Railway improves the washroom facilities and restores the children’s play area, as these small changes would greatly enhance the overall visitor experience.

If you’re planning a trip to Kolkata or have a few hours before or after your train from Howrah Junction, this museum deserves a place on your itinerary.

Nizam Kolkata Review: Is This Heritage Restaurant Worth Visiting? Honest Experience, Menu, Prices & Mutton Biryani

Nizam Kolkata

Nizam Kolkata Review

When people think about Kolkata’s legendary food scene, one name appears repeatedly—Nizam Kolkata. Located in the bustling Dharmatala (Esplanade) area, this iconic heritage restaurant has been serving generations of food lovers with its famous Mughlai dishes, biryani, kebabs, and rolls.

Before visiting, my wife Priyunka and I did what most travellers do today—we searched Google, watched YouTube videos, and read reviews. Since Nizam Kolkata, Nizam Restaurant Kolkata, and Nizam’s Restaurant consistently appeared among the top search results, we decided to experience it ourselves.

Was it worth the hype? Here’s our honest review.

Why We Chose Nizam Kolkata

Whenever we plan a food vlog, we don’t simply visit a restaurant because it’s famous. We prefer researching places that have a rich history and a strong reputation.

Nizam Kolkata stood out because of its heritage, positive customer reviews, and its place in Kolkata’s food culture. Being located near New Market also made it a perfect stop during our day out in central Kolkata.

Nizam Kolkata

Location and Accessibility

Nizam Kolkata is located at Dharmatala (Esplanade), Kolkata, one of the city’s busiest commercial and shopping hubs.

You can easily reach the restaurant by:

  • Metro
  • Bus
  • Taxi
  • App-based cab

If you’re visiting New Market or Esplanade, it’s just a short walk away.

AC vs Non-AC Dining – Which One Did We Choose?

The day we visited was quite hot and humid. Thankfully, Nizam offers both AC and Non-AC dining sections.

Since we wanted a comfortable lunch, we chose the air-conditioned restaurant.

The AC section was clean, spacious, and peaceful. It provided a relaxing environment away from the busy streets outside.

First Impressions

Our first impression was positive.

The staff greeted us politely and quickly guided us to our table. The restaurant felt clean and organised despite being one of Kolkata’s busiest heritage restaurants.

We also checked the washroom, which was properly maintained—a small detail that often matters when travelling with family.

A Brilliant Branding Idea That Impressed Me

One of the most interesting things we noticed wasn’t on the menu.

It was on the table.

Instead of ordinary table mats, every table featured printed newspaper articles about Nizam from different decades. These included coverage from publications such as The Telegraph, The Times of India, and BBC.

Having studied MBA in Marketing, I immediately appreciated the idea. While customers wait for their food, they’re naturally drawn into the restaurant’s history and achievements.

It’s a simple yet powerful branding strategy that reinforces trust, heritage, and customer engagement. Sometimes, the best marketing doesn’t look like marketing at all.

Nizam Kolkata

Nizam Kolkata Menu and Prices

The menu offers a wide range of Mughlai dishes suitable for families, couples, and tourists.

Popular items include:

  • Mutton Biryani
  • Chicken Biryani
  • Kathi Rolls
  • Chicken Chaap
  • Mutton Chaap
  • Kebabs
  • Mughlai Paratha
  • Tandoori Dishes
  • Soft Drinks
  • Desserts

Considering the location and reputation, we found the prices to be reasonable.

Nizam Kolkata
Nizam Kolkata

Our Order – Mutton Biryani

After looking through the menu, we ordered two plates of Mutton Biryani.

The food arrived quickly and was served on elegant ceramic plates, adding to the dining experience.

Honest Mutton Biryani Review

The biryani certainly lived up to its reputation.

The long-grain rice was aromatic and perfectly cooked. The mutton was tender, juicy, and easy to separate from the bone. The signature Kolkata-style potato was soft, flavourful, and cooked just right.

Unlike heavily spiced biryanis, Nizam’s version focuses on balance. Every bite was rich in aroma without being overpowering.

If you enjoy authentic Kolkata-style biryani, you’ll probably appreciate this one.

Service and Overall Experience

The staff remained courteous throughout our visit.

Our order arrived without much delay, and the service felt professional yet friendly. Even though the restaurant was busy, everything was handled smoothly.

Overall, we had a pleasant dining experience.

A Beautiful Rainy Walk After Lunch

Just as we stepped outside after finishing our meal, the weather changed.

A light drizzle began to fall over Dharmatala.

The usually crowded New Market area suddenly looked calm and refreshing. Walking together under our umbrella through the rain became one of the most memorable moments of the day.

Sometimes, it’s these unexpected experiences that make a trip truly special.

Is Nizam Kolkata Worth Visiting?

After our visit, the answer is yes.

If you’re looking for:

  • Authentic Kolkata Mughlai cuisine
  • Delicious Mutton Biryani
  • Comfortable AC dining
  • Heritage restaurant experience
  • Friendly service
  • Reasonable prices

then Nizam Kolkata is definitely worth adding to your food itinerary.

It’s more than just a restaurant—it’s a place where history, food, and culture come together.

Final Verdict

Our visit to Nizam Kolkata was much more than just a lunch outing. From enjoying a delicious plate of mutton biryani in the comfortable AC dining area to discovering the restaurant’s clever branding through newspaper table mats, every part of the experience reflected its rich heritage.

Our Helmet Shopping Experience

After exploring many shops, we finally visited Dadaji Helmet Shop.

The shop had a large collection of helmets in different colours and sizes.

After comparing several models, I purchased a Studds Full Face Helmet in Matte Green.

The best part was the price.

Both helmets together cost us around ₹1,950 after discount, which was significantly lower than the MRP.

Helmet is one safety accessory where you should never compromise.

Although many attractive local helmets were available, we preferred buying genuine ISI-certified Studds helmets because of

If you ride regularly, investing in a good helmet is always worth it.

This makes Sonajhuri Haat one of the best places in Kolkata for anyone interested in authentic handicrafts.

Our Visit to Sonajhuri Haat

We reached the fair during the afternoon and immediately noticed the lively atmosphere. The entrance itself reflected Bengal’s traditional artistic culture.

As we walked through the stalls, every corner displayed something unique. Unlike ordinary shopping complexes, every shop had its own identity because each artisan specializes in a different craft.

Many artisans happily explained how their crafts were made and how much time each piece required.
