Nathula Pass Gangtok Travel Guide
If you are planning a trip to Sikkim, then Nathula Pass Gangtok travel guide is something you must search before going. In this blog, I am sharing our real experience of visiting Nathula Pass, Baba Mandir, and Tsomgo Lake along with important tips, permit details, and mistakes you should avoid.
This is the Part 4 of our Sikkim travel series, where we explored one of the most iconic and high-altitude destinations near Gangtok.
Starting the Day – Journey Begins
We woke up early in the morning, excited for the most awaited day of our trip. The plan was to visit Nathula Pass, Baba Harbhajan Singh Mandir, and Tsomgo Lake.
Our driver, Roshan Bhai, who was with us the previous day as well, arrived on time with his WagonR. After getting fresh, we started our journey.
Initially, the road conditions were not very good, but once we entered the BRO (Border Roads Organisation) maintained roads, the drive became smooth and scenic.

Breakfast Stop
On the way, we stopped for breakfast. There were limited options available like Maggi and Momos, and we chose Momos.
Honestly, in such cold weather, hot momos taste amazing and give you the perfect energy boost for the journey ahead.
Entering the Mountains – Mesmerizing Views
As we continued our journey, the real beauty of Sikkim started unfolding. The mountains, clouds, and valleys together created a heavenly view.
This is where you truly understand why people search for a Nathula Pass Gangtok travel guide before visiting — because the journey itself is an experience.
Nathula Pass Permit Process (Important Info)
One important thing to know is:
👉 You need a permit to visit Nathula Pass
We had already submitted our documents one day before, and our permit was ready.
Required Documents:
- Aadhaar Card / Voter ID / Passport
- Passport size photo
- Indian citizens only allowed
💡 Pro Tip: Always arrange permits through a registered travel agent or hotel in advance.
Important Mistake to Avoid
Here’s something very important based on our experience:
Our WagonR was not allowed to go all the way to Nathula Pass. It stopped around 4 km before the actual location.
We had to take another vehicle (like Tata Sumo), which cost extra.
👉 Recommendation:
Do NOT book small cars privately. Instead:
- Book a shared vehicle from Gangtok
- Or confirm clearly with your agent about Nathula access
This is a common mistake many tourists make.
Nathula Pass Experience (India-China Border)
Finally, we reached Nathula Pass.
- It is located at approx 14,140 ft altitude
- It connects India with China (Tibet region)
The place was crowded, and everyone was busy taking photos.
Key Observations:
- Oxygen level is low
- Cold is very intense
- Breathing can feel difficult
💡 Tip: Carry medicines or oxygen cans if needed.
This part is the highlight of any Nathula Pass Gangtok travel guide, and experiencing it in real life is unforgettable.

Baba Harbhajan Singh Mandir
After Nathula, we visited the famous Baba Harbhajan Singh Mandir (New Baba Mandir).
About Baba Mandir:
- Dedicated to an Indian Army soldier
- Believed that his spirit protects soldiers
- Very sacred place among locals and army
We couldn’t visit the Old Baba Mandir because it requires extra cost and travel.
👉 So, if you want to visit both, confirm in advance.
Tsomgo Lake (Changu Lake) – Detailed Guide
Next, we visited Tsomgo Lake, one of the most beautiful lakes in Sikkim.
Key Details:
- Altitude: ~12,400 ft
- Also known as Changu Lake
- Changes color with seasons
Activities:
- Yak riding 🐂
- Photography
- Local shopping
However, one downside:
👉 There was a strong smell near the yak riding area.
Still, the beauty of the lake makes it a must-visit destination in every Nathula Pass Gangtok travel guide.
Evening at MG Marg
After returning to Gangtok, we spent our evening at MG Marg.
- A clean and happening street
- No vehicles allowed
- Perfect for walking, shopping, and relaxing
We had dinner there and then returned to our hotel.
